The 2300 years
The longest measured span in Scripture, sharing its starting decree with the 70 weeks and ending with a sanctuary cleansed.

The question behind it
“How long shall be the vision?” is asked about the whole sequence — ram, goat, four divisions, and a later power that magnifies itself and casts truth to the ground. An answer of six literal years could not cover a vision that had already run for centuries before the question was asked.
Evenings and mornings
The Hebrew reads “two thousand three hundred evening-morning” — the daily sacrifice language of Exodus 29:39. It is sanctuary vocabulary, which is why the answer given is about a sanctuary, and why the prophecy that follows in Daniel 9 opens with prayer for a ruined one.
Gabriel's unfinished errand
Daniel 8 ends with the prophet fainting and the number unexplained — “none understood it.” Daniel 9 begins with the same angel returning: “understand the matter, and consider the vision.” Chapter 9 is not a new subject; it is the explanation chapter 8 stopped short of giving.
Where it lands — 1844
2300 years from autumn 457 BC reaches autumn 1844. The 490 measure to the Messiah; the remaining 1810 run on to the cleansing of the sanctuary. One start, two endings, and the first ending verified by the cross is what gives confidence in the second.
Judgment language
Daniel 7 sets a judgment scene at the same end of the sequence — thrones cast down, the Ancient of days seated, the books opened. Revelation opens its temple and shows the ark of His testament at the same point (Revelation 11:19), and announces “the hour of his judgment is come” (Revelation 14:7). Three books describe one appointment.
What cleansing meant to a Hebrew reader
Leviticus 16 is the only cleansing of the sanctuary in the law — the Day of Atonement, when the record of sin was finally dealt with and the camp settled its accounts with God. The 2300 does not end in destruction; it ends in a courtroom whose verdict is deliverance for God's people (Daniel 7:22).
