The 1260 years

Three and a half years drawn as months, as days, as “a time, and times, and half a time.” Seven passages, one length: 1260 days, 42 months, three and a half times. The repetition across both books is the tell that one period is meant — and that the period matters.

The same measure

The day-for-a-year rule that governs the 70 weeks and the 2300 governs here too, so the span reads as 1260 years. Read literally, three and a half years cannot contain the wearing out of the saints, the woman's long flight into the wilderness, and the rise of a power that reaches the judgment.

Where it begins — 538

Daniel 7 gives the conditions: the horn rises among the ten and three are plucked up before it. The decisive turn is Byzantine: in 537 imperial power deposed Silverius and installed Vigilius, and in March 538 the Ostrogothic siege of Rome was abandoned — the end of the Ostrogothic (Arian) papacy and the beginning of the Byzantine papacy, the year the bishop of Rome's authority becomes effective under Justinian's decree. The horn does not begin when it is born; it begins when the obstacles are gone.

Where it ends — 1798

1260 years from 538 is 1798, when Berthier's French army took the pope prisoner and the papal states fell. “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity” (Revelation 13:10) — the power that had led others captive was led captive itself, and the wound of Revelation 13:3 is that event.

The woman in the wilderness

The same 1260 is the period the true church spends fed and hidden — Waldenses in the Alpine valleys, Lollards, Huguenots, Anabaptists. The prophecy has two subjects in one span: a system in dominion, and a people preserved. Neither cancels the other.

What happens after

The wound and the worship crisis of Revelation 13 sit on the far side of this period. The wound falls in 1798; the healing has been visible ever since; the wound is healed fully only at the overmastering delusion, when all the world wonders after the beast. That three-clause line is the current teaching — not one moment, but a process with an end still ahead.

Two powers rise in the same year

1798 is also the vacancy: the wound opens a space, and two powers move into it — the atheism that struck the blow, and a lamb-horned nation rising “out of the earth” in the same era. The sixth-head era of Revelation 17 is the contest between them, and it starts at the end of this 1260.

Systems, never people: the 1260 indicts an arrangement of church and state, not the millions who worshipped sincerely inside it.
